Webinar: What Donors Want

This recorded Zoom webinar features Sonjia Smith and Wendy Brown, both major donors and philanthropy experts, as they discuss effective means of fundraising as we all negotiate working on major gifts for our institutions. Discussion includes what constitutes a good base for fundraising, what absolutely gets you in hot water, and insights and suggestions on how to create and sustain successful relationships. The session was moderated by Kat Imhoff, vice-chair for the Wildlife Center of Virginia board of directors.

Wendy Brown is an entrepreneur, nonprofit professional and philanthropist.  She believes that the Charlottesville region can be the best place for EVERYONE who lives here.  Toward that end, she has worked to promote collaboration across the community by founding the Center for Nonprofit Excellence and enabling entrepreneurs to get a head start by co-founding the  Community Investment Collaborative.  Those experiences gave her hands-on knowledge of all aspects of nonprofit management - including grant writing, and the cultivation, ask and stewardship of donors. Wendy’s passion is focused on empowering individuals and organizations to best utilize their resources and talents to forge social change.

Sonjia Smith is a local philanthropist and political donor focused on issues around social justice.  She volunteers to steward major donor relationships at Legal Aid Justice Center, and she raises money for progressive political candidates.  After many years of this work, she continues to dread asks.  She pysches herself up for asks by remembering an incident that she tells during our conversation.
